The Spinning Wheel (2022/24)
The Spinning Wheel was originally composed for the rackett, a Renaissance-era double-reed instrument. I adapted this piece for a Civil War-era piano at the Potsdam Public Library, which has a charming out-of-tune quality to it. I performed it in 2024 at Pants for Panthers!, a concert my husband and I organized.

Three Miniatures for Solo Piano: Microbes (2018)
Microbes is a set of three short piano solo pieces that depicts three distinct species of bacteria and fungi. Each species has its own unique characteristics, and the piano sound is used to delineate them - the first, Staphylococcus aureus (gold staph), is a type of pathogenic or even deadly germ with a beautiful golden glow. The piano starts with an elusive and mysterious sound, and later breaks out fiercely. The second, Monascus purpureus (red yeast rice), is a species of rice mold, red in color and rigid in shape. It is widely used in cooking. The music shifts around the pitch center B. In the third movement Saccharomyces cerevisiae (brewer's yeast), the piano forms a bubbly soundscape in the beginning, and drifts away in a tipsy manner. The three miniatures were constructed upon a twelve-tone matrix, although not strictly so. |
